The inspiring testimony of our forest custodian Mayrely Tamani highlights labor inclusion of people with disabilities in the forestry sector

As part of the event organized by the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion in Peru (MTC) and its campaign “For More Inclusive Companies”, aimed at recognizing and promoting inclusive practices in the workplace, Green Gold Forestry (GGF) was recognized as an inclusive company in the Loreto region, thanks to our commitment to equal opportunities and team diversity.

Mayrely’s example: inclusion with purpose in the forestry sector

During the ceremony, we participated in a panel led by Mayrely Tamani Arana, an environmental engineer by profession and a forest custodian with a hearing disability. She delivered a powerful testimony about her experience as a deaf woman in a traditionally exclusionary environment:

“I became ill at the age of 17, during my university studies. That change—losing my hearing—was a huge challenge. At first, it was very difficult and frustrating to adapt to it all. Going from being a hearing person to a person with a disability has not been easy, but thanks to God, my family, and my job, I’m managing it. The road has been long, but now I feel quite at peace. Things are going well, and I’m specializing in something that fulfills me and makes me happy.”

Mayrely spoke about the challenges she has faced, from communication barriers with her coworkers to structural obstacles. She also highlighted the support received from the company, which has been adapting its processes to foster more accessible work environments:

“The company has been very supportive. It has provided the tools and resources I need to grow professionally. I’ve felt included, supported by my colleagues, and treated with empathy—and that’s something I’ll always be grateful for.”

Her participation was applauded by Minister Daniel Maurate and other attendees, underlining the importance of creating workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to grow and thrive:

“I would tell business owners to look beyond disability. See the person’s potential—see the professional’s potential.”, Mayrely emphasized.

Commitment to inclusive and safe spaces for all

This recognition reaffirms Green Gold Forestry’s commitment to building an inclusive, safe, and equitable workplace. The company continues to implement concrete actions to recognize and value diversity across its operations.

A clear example is the reasonable accommodations made to support communication with Mayrely. Regarding this, David Lazo, Deputy Manager and Head of Human Resources, stated:

“Within the company, Mayrely uses a translator installed on her laptop and cellphone. She activates the microphone and the audio is transcribed into text, allowing her to read in real time. This complements her ability to read lips, although we know it’s not the same with every person in a meeting. That’s why this electronic translator greatly helps with her learning and interaction with others.”

“In addition, all staff have been made aware of her condition, which helps them improve how they communicate with her. Currently, Mayrely is also taking English classes alongside the team in Iquitos.”

These types of technological adaptations and ongoing support reflect Green Gold Forestry’s dedication to creating truly inclusive workplaces, where every person can develop fully and showcase their talents.
